Listing
Localize your listing without translating everything
October 26, 2026 · 4 min read · Fermium100
You don't need to translate your whole listing. Start with the fields search reads, name, subtitle and keywords, in the languages your most important stores read. Your screenshots can stay in your main language at first.
What you can localize
- Name and subtitle: up to 30 characters each.
- Keywords: up to 100 characters.
- Description, promotional text and “What's New”.
- Screenshots and app previews.
- Support URL, marketing URL and privacy policy URL.
What you get for free
When you add a language in App Store Connect, its screenshots and most fields start as copies of your main language. Only the description and keywords start empty, so you have to write those two.
Every store reads more than one language
Each App Store has a default language, and often extra ones. Your keywords in all of them count for search in that store.
- United States: English (U.S.), plus Spanish (Mexico), French, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Vietnamese and Arabic.
- Germany, France, Italy, Japan and many more: their own language, plus English.
- Canada: English (Canada) and French (Canada).
- Switzerland: German, plus English (U.K.), French and Italian.
- India: English (U.K.), plus Hindi and ten more languages.
This gives you more room for keywords. An English (U.K.) localization with new keywords counts in every store that reads English (U.K.). But people with that language see its name and subtitle, so keep them readable.
Who sees which language
People see the localization that matches their language setting. If none matches, Apple shows the next best one. Otherwise they see your main language.
Where to start
- Find the countries where you already get impressions or downloads.
- Add the default language of those stores.
- Write name, subtitle and keywords with words people there really search. A word-for-word translation often misses them.
- Write a short description. It has to be there, but it doesn't have to be long.
- Keep your screenshots for now. Translate their headlines later for your biggest stores.
- Send it with your next app version. Name, subtitle and keywords change with a new version.
Fermium100 puts your keywords next to name, subtitle and keyword field in every language, checks them against Apple's rules as you type, and sends them to App Store Connect in one click. Screenshot Studio translates your headlines into every language.
Questions
- Which languages does the US App Store read?
- English (U.S.), plus Spanish (Mexico), French, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Vietnamese and Arabic.
- Do I have to translate my screenshots?
- No. A new language uses your main language's screenshots until you upload new ones.
- Does a translated description help search?
- Apple matches your name, subtitle, keywords and primary category in search. Write the description for people, in their language.
- What do people see in a country I haven't localized for?
- The localization closest to their language setting, or your main language if nothing fits.
