Listing
Name, subtitle, keywords: where every word counts
October 21, 2026 · 3 min read · Fermium100
App Store search reads only a few places of your listing. Use them well, and your app shows up for many more searches.
The three fields Apple searches
- App name: up to 30 characters. The strongest place for a keyword.
- Subtitle: up to 30 characters. Shown under your name in search results.
- Keyword field: up to 100 characters. Hidden from users, only for search.
Your description is not used for App Store search. Write it for people, not for keywords.
Rules that save characters
- Separate keywords with commas and no spaces, like habit, tracker, routine.
- Use every word only once. A word in your name or subtitle doesn't need to be in the keyword field again.
- Apple combines words across the three fields. “Habit” in the name and “tracker” in the keywords also find “habit tracker”.
- Skip words like “app” and “free”. They take space and don't bring you searches.
Every country has its own fields
Each App Store reads the texts in its languages. Some stores read more than one: the US store also reads Spanish (Mexico), Chinese, French, Korean and several more. That gives you extra sets of fields for the same store.
When changes count
Name, subtitle and keywords change with a new app version. Once the update is live, give search a few days before you judge a change.
Fermium100 checks every word against these rules while you write your listing, and shows which words bring searches.
